Artisan Trail Tour & Beautiful Beaches

Planning a weekend trip to Salt Spring Island? Two days is the sweet spot — enough time to experience the island's famous Artisan Trail tour, soak up its best beaches and parks, and still feel like you've truly discovered one of BC's most beloved Gulf Islands.

Why Salt Spring Island Deserves Two Days

Salt Spring Island is the largest of British Columbia's Southern Gulf Islands, and it packs an extraordinary amount of character into its 180 square kilometres. There are working wineries, a spring-water-fed craft brewery, an award-winning cheesery with baby goats, an organic apple and cider farm, artisan studios, saltwater beaches, forested trails, and a buzzing Saturday market in Ganges.

One day on Salt Spring Island feels wonderful. Two days feels like you actually know the place.

This itinerary pairs the Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off Artisan Trail tour on Day 1 with a relaxed beaches and parks day on Day 2 — the best of both worlds: a guided artisan adventure followed by pure island relaxation.

Day 1: The Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off Artisan Trail Tour

What Is the Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off Tour?

The Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off Artisan Trail is a small-group guided shuttle tour that loops 28km around the south end of Salt Spring Island, stopping at six of the island's most iconic artisan producers. It's not just transportation — it's the experience itself: a full day of tasting, sipping, and savouring your way through Salt Spring's best local producers, with a knowledgeable driver who knows the island inside and out.

The tour runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May through September, with three departure times each day: 10:00am, 11:00am, and 12:00pm.

With only 20 spots per departure, it sells out regularly — especially in summer. Book in advance at saltspringhopon.com.

Pricing: Adults from $55 CDN  |  Children (2–12) $35 CDN

Where the Tour Departs

All departures leave from the Salt Spring Island Visitor Info Centre at 121 Lower Ganges Rd — right in the heart of Ganges Village, steps from the harbour, cafés, shops, and the Public Market. This is the only departure point.

Tip: Plan to arrive at least 10–15 minutes before your departure time to check in.

Choosing Your Departure Time

You must board at the Visitor Info Centre at one of three departure times — 10am, 11am, or 12pm. Once you've started, you can hop off at any stop and re-board the next loop (approximately every hour), giving you roughly 55 minutes at each stop.

Our recommendation: the 11:00am departure.

This gives you time to:

  • Catch an early morning ferry from Victoria or Vancouver Island
  • Grab breakfast or coffee in Ganges before the tour starts
  • Have a full, relaxed afternoon to linger at your favourite stops

If you're coming from the mainland or want maximum time at all stops (particularly the winery and cidery, which close at 5pm), the 10:00am departure is worth the earlier start.

The Artisan Trail: Stop by Stop

The tour departs Ganges and winds south through forested roads and coastal scenery on a spectacular 28km loop.

Stop 1 — Salt Spring Island Cheese & Goat Farm

Approx. arrival: 20 minutes after departure | Closes 5pm

This is one of Salt Spring Island's most famous producers. The farm's courtyard café serves wood-fired artisan pizza, fresh salads, and cheesecake made with their own goat's milk cheese. Sample a wide range of handcrafted cheeses paired with house-made jams, chutneys, and preserves, and cool off with goat milk gelato.

Beyond the food, the farm itself is a delight — self-guided walks let you visit the goat barn, watch the cheese-making process through viewing windows, and breathe in the pastoral setting before the bus continues.

Tip: If you're on the 10am or 11am departure and haven't eaten much, this is an excellent spot for a proper mid-morning meal. The pizza is genuinely excellent.

Stop 2 — Sacred Mountain Lavender Farm  (Seasonal: July & August)

Approx. arrival: 30 minutes after departure | Closes 5pm

Tucked into the slopes of Mount Tuam on Salt Spring's southern tip, Sacred Mountain Lavender is one of the most peaceful and visually stunning stops on the trail. Over 60 varieties of organically grown lavender spread across 2.5 acres when in bloom (late June through early September).

The farm offers self-guided walks through the lavender fields, a behind-the-scenes look at essential oil distillation, and a farm shop with plants, spa products, and culinary treats. Cool off with a lavender fruitsicle or tea.

Note: This is a seasonal stop, included on the tour when the lavender is in bloom — primarily July and August.

Stop 3 — Salt Spring Brewing Co.

Approx. arrival: 40 minutes after departure | Opens 11:30am | Closes 6pm

Tucked into a forested hillside, Salt Spring Brewing Co. produces small-batch craft beer brewed with mountain spring water — fresh, unpasteurized, no preservatives. The forest-side patio surrounded by Douglas fir and cedar is the star of the show: grab a pint or tasting flight, find a seat in the trees, and let the island work its magic.

Note: The brewery opens at 11:30am. Guests on the 10:00am departure who arrive before opening can explore the surroundings and re-board on the next loop.

Stop 4 — Garry Oaks Estate Winery

Approx. arrival: 45 minutes after departure | Closes 5pm

Perched above the Burgoyne Valley, Garry Oaks Estate Winery grows all of its grapes on-site across seven sustainably farmed acres, producing award-winning estate wines. The historic farm property has a tranquil pond, a mini labyrinth among the Garry oak trees, and Adirondack chairs placed exactly where the valley views are best. This is Salt Spring Island wine touring at its finest.

Stop 5 — Ciderworks & Salt Spring Apple Co.

Approx. arrival: 55 minutes after departure | Closes 6pm

The Ciderworks sits above a sloping hillside orchard home to over 425 heritage and connoisseur apple varieties. Small-batch cider is made with minimal intervention and no added sugar, letting the fruit speak for itself. Tastings are poured in a charming building overlooking the orchard, with ocean views in the distance. Seasonal treats like apple fritters are a highlight.

Return — Ganges Village & the Saturday Public Market

The bus returns to the Visitor Info Centre in Ganges Village.

If your Day 1 falls on a Saturday, the famous Saturday Market runs from April to October in Centennial Park on the harbour — one of the finest outdoor markets in BC. Even on other days, Ganges offers excellent restaurants, galleries, waterfront strolls, and local shops.

Day 2: Beaches, Parks & Pure Island Relaxation

After a day of artisan trails and tastings, Day 2 is about slowing right down. Salt Spring Island has some of the most beautiful beaches and parks in British Columbia — and most visitors don't know the half of them.

Morning: Ruckle Provincial Park

Start early at Ruckle Provincial Park on the southeastern tip of the island near Beaver Point. One of the largest provincial parks in BC's Gulf Islands, Ruckle combines old-growth forest, rocky shoreline, wildflower meadows, and sweeping water views toward the Saanich Peninsula.

The Ruckle Farm Loop meanders through historic farmland still actively farmed by the Ruckle family under a heritage agreement, while the coastal trails hug the shoreline for kilometres. Bald eagles are commonly spotted, and the tidal pools along the rocky shore are full of life at low tide.

Tip: Pack a picnic breakfast. There are no services in the park — just nature, space, and the kind of quiet you came to an island to find.

Mid-Morning: Mount Maxwell (Baynes Peak)

Head up to Mount Maxwell Provincial Park — specifically Baynes Peak, at 588 metres the highest accessible point on Salt Spring Island. The view is genuinely jaw-dropping: the Fulford Valley below, Vancouver Island to the west, the mainland mountains to the north, and the Gulf Islands scattered across the water in every direction. On a clear day you can see as far as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.

Lunch: Ganges or a Beach Picnic

Head back toward Ganges for lunch, or stop at a local bakery or deli to put together a picnic. Salt Spring has excellent local food — fresh bread, artisan cheeses (you'll know exactly how good after yesterday), and seasonal produce from local farms.

Afternoon: Beddis Beach

Beddis Beach is one of Salt Spring Island's most beautiful and least-talked-about spots. Located on the eastern shore south of Ganges, it's a long, quiet stretch of sand and shell backed by arbutus trees. At low tide the beach expands dramatically, and the sheltered eastern water is warmer than the exposed western coast — the island's best swimming beach in summer.

Bring a book, a blanket, and nothing that needs doing. Bald eagles perch in the arbutus trees overhead, harbour seals rest on nearby rocks, and great blue herons stalk the shallows.

Portlock Park sits right on Ganges Harbour — a lovely waterfront green space for watching float planes land, letting kids run free, or simply sitting on the grass as the afternoon light crosses the water. The park connects to the harbour walkway and is easy to combine with a final wander through Ganges village.

Late Afternoon: St. Mary Lake

St. Mary Lake, the largest lake on Salt Spring Island, sits in the island's interior north of Ganges and is one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Gulf Islands. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and open-water swimming are popular here on hot summer afternoons — a lovely, unhurried way to spend the last hours of daylight.

Evening: Farewell Dinner in Ganges

End your two days on Salt Spring with dinner in Ganges. The waterfront restaurants have the best atmosphere in the evening — boats lit up in the harbour, the energy of the village settling into something easy and warm.

Then catch the Fulford Harbour to Swartz Bay ferry back to Victoria, or head to Long Harbour for the mainland sailing.

Practical Planning

Where to Stay

Salt Spring Island has accommodation to suit most budgets: waterfront resorts, boutique B&Bs, vacation rentals, and campgrounds. Ganges is the most convenient base — close to the tour departure, restaurants, and the market. Fulford Harbour is quieter and ideal if you're arriving from Victoria by ferry. Book well ahead — Salt Spring fills up fast on weekends from June through August.

Getting Around

  • Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off — the centrepiece of Day 1; book at saltspringhopon.com
  • Salt Spring Island Transit — public bus connecting Fulford Harbour, Ganges, and other communities
  • Taxi — local taxi services operate island-wide
  • Cycling / E-bikes — e-bike rentals make the hilly terrain very manageable
  • Rental Car — available on the island for maximum flexibility

Tour Booking

Book at saltspringhopon.com. In peak season — particularly July and August — the 20-seat departures sell out well in advance. Don't leave it to the day before.

BC Ferries

Vehicle reservations are strongly recommended for the Swartz Bay to Fulford Harbour and Tsawwassen to Long Harbour routes in summer. Foot passengers generally don't need reservations but should check current schedules at bcferries.com. The Victoria to Salt Spring Island ferry runs multiple sailings daily from Swartz Bay.

Is Two Days Enough for Salt Spring Island?

Two days gives you a wonderful, well-rounded experience — but honestly, you'll want to come back for longer. The combination of the Salt Spring Hop On Hop Off Artisan Trail on Day 1 (covering the cheesery, lavender farm, brewery, winery, and cidery on a scenic 28km loop) with a relaxed beaches and parks day on Day 2 (Ruckle Park, Mount Maxwell, Beddis Beach) is the ideal introduction to everything that makes Salt Spring Island one of the best weekend trips from Victoria or Vancouver.

Plan your weekend, book your spot on the tour early, and get yourself to the Salt Spring Visitor Info Centre at 121 Lower Ganges Rd by your chosen departure time on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday between May and September.
